Sewer Scope Inspection

Sewer scope inspections are typically not included in a standard home inspection, but are just as important. A trained inspector runs a specialized flexible borescope camera through your home's drainpipe to examine sewer lines and underground pipes for flaws, imperfections, or serious problems.

What Is a Sewer Scope Inspection?

If you're thinking about buying a home, don't overlook one of the most commonly-ignored yet most important parts of the inspection process. A sewer scope inspection runs a flexible borescope camera through your home's drainpipe, feeding images and video to a monitor to examine the sewer lines and underground pipes for any flaws, imperfections, or serious problems. The entire process usually takes no more than an hour.

02

Cost & What's Included

A sewer scope inspection is $100 when bundled with a home inspection, or $150 as a standalone service. You will receive a recorded video of the sewer inspection as well as a detailed account within the main report. Consider this: the cost of repairing a broken sewer line runs around $250–$300 per foot; repairing or replacing an entire line with major structural faults could easily run thousands of dollars.

03

What to Look For in the Results

During the inspection you and your inspector will review the live video feed together, looking for: serious clogs or blockages; cracks, damage, or imperfections in the line; the type of material (clay, concrete, plastic, metal); roots growing through the line; separation or failure of the line; and potential damage to the septic tank if present.

04

Should I Get a Sewer Scope Inspection?

Absolutely. A sewer line is often one of the most costly things to repair in a home. If no issues are detected, great! If there are minor problems, you may be able to negotiate a better price or plan for the repair in your budget. If there is a major issue, you'll have the documentation you need to walk away, require the homeowner to make repairs, or reduce the sale price accordingly.
